Publications
Since the foundation of the National Meteorological Service, in 1946, and the campaigns of king D. Carlos at the end of the 19th century, the necessity of access to the expert knowledge and to the inherent scientific research led to the collection of many documents of great scientific and historical value in the areas of Meteorology, Geophysics, Oceanography and Marine Resources.
IPMA’s Head Quarters Library has a rich collection which was inherited from the Geophysical Institute Infante D. Luís that was the origin of the Portuguese meteorological network. Along with specialized documentation in Earth Sciences – Geophysics, Seismology, Meteorology and Climatology, there also exist the main periodical journals, with special relevance to the publications of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an agency of the United Nations.
IPMA’s library at Algés facilities is specialized in the area of Ocean Science and Technology. Of relevance are king D. Carlos documents, considered the father of the Portuguese Oceanography, the Prince Albert of Monaco works, atlas maps and charts, mainly of Portugal.
This library is part of ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts), also being a member of the EURASLIC (European Association of Aquatic Sciences Libraries and Information Centers) and it is included in the group of the main documentation centers worldwide concerning the research of the ocean, IAMSLIC (International Association of Aquatic Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers).
