The NI AZORES OCEAN Project consists of the construction and operation of a new scientific research vessel that integrates and reinforces the strategic vision of the Regional Government of the Azores for the development of the Azores Sea Cluster and the Portugal Sea Cluster.
The begining of the operations of this scientific platform of excellence is scheduled for January 1, 2026, from the Autonomous Region of the Azores, making it available to collaborate on all projects of regional and national interest.
The operational objectives for this new research vessel include ensuring operational planning of more than 200 days per year, with a dedicated technical crew, guaranteeing the success of this investment.
The entire platform, together with the designed trim, aims to achieve top scientific research capacity and multidisciplinary capacity, integrated across all segments within the scope of the blue economy.
Being a highly versatile and multipurpose platform, with excellent operating conditions, it can easily be used for aquaculture support missions, work on submarine cables, diving campaigns, support in the field of renewable energy, high-resolution hydrographic surveys, fisheries biology missions, among other possibilities.
It is considered that the ship will greatly reinforce the installed scientific capabilities as it is a new, challenging and ambitious project, initiated by the Regional Government of the Azores.
Thus, a differentiated platform, potentially generating added value within the scope of the Sea Cluster, will be made available to national and international partners, with priority for the sea of Azores and Portugal.
It is planned to obtain innovative scientific results, capable of generating more and better blue economy and leveraging synergies of added value for our common future and that of future generations.
