The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) celebrated the World Meteorological Day (23/03), on 21 March, to highlight the importance of meteorological services in safeguarding lives and property.
This year, ‘Early warning for all’ was the theme chosen for the celebrations by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), warning of ‘the urgent need to ensure that all communities, especially the most vulnerable, have access to effective early warning systems for extreme weather events’.
As the national meteorological authority, IPMA once again joined in the celebration of the event, carrying out a series of initiatives.
In the presence of the Secretary of State for the Sea, Lídia Bulcão, the members of the Board of Directors and those responsible for the areas of Meteorology, Aeronautical Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics, the World Meteorological Day Commemorative Session was held at IPMA's headquarters in Lisbon on 21 March, bringing together more than a hundred employees in person and registering the participation of around 50 remotely.
The event included speeches by various directors of the institute, as well as a welcome for the new meteorologists and geophysicists who joined the different teams in January, taking up positions in the institute's offices across the country and in the autonomous regions.
Prizes were also awarded to the winners of the ‘Let's Photograph Meteorological and Climatic Phenomena’ photography competition, launched last year. Made up of the President of IPMA, José Guerreiro, the Member of the Board of Directors, Telmo Carvalho, the Head of the Meteorology and Geophysics Department, Victor Prior, the Head of the Meteorological Forecasting and Surveillance Division, Nuno Lopes, the Head of the Climate and Climate Change Division, Ricardo Deus, and photographer Pedro Moura Pinheiro, the jury decided to award the prize to Henrique Elderink, a student from the Redondo School Group (Évora). The 2nd and 3rd places were won by Guilherme Dias, from Escola Secundária Carolina Michaellis (Porto), and Rafaela Ferreira, from Escola Secundária Gago Coutinho (Alverca do Ribatejo).
In addition to this moment, we would also like to highlight other aspects of the celebration of the event:
- Publication of testimonials from new colleagues in Meteorology and Geophysics, which were released during the week on the institute's social networks;
- Sharing of videos of the Chairman and Members of the Board of Directors, as well as those responsible for the Meteorology and Geophysics Department and the IPMA's Meteorological Forecasting and Surveillance Division.
Some schools also organised events to publicise the importance of meteorology. We highlight the presence of meteorologists Fernanda Carvalho and Diamantino Henriques, on 20 March, at Domingos Rebelo Secondary School (Ponta Delgada, Azores), with the initiative ‘À Conversa sobre o Tempo e Clima’ (in celebration of Spring Equinox Day). Climatologist Jorge Neto will be at the University of Aveiro on 25 March for a session organised by the Physics Department on World Meteorology Day.
