As weather conditions are one of the main factors conditioning agricultural development and production, agrometeorological information is of major importance for agricultural activity planning ands decision taking.
It is responsibility of IPMA to prepare information on the agrometeorological conditions in each agricultural year, as well as to develop applications in the scope of agroclimatology.
Daily observations and a water balance model run on a daily basis enable not only an analysis to be made in real time, but also an a posteriori analysis of the agrometeorological conditions of previous days or months, as well as statistical processing of data from several years.
By using the information thus obtained, IPMA issues charts for agrometeorological parameters every ten days. IPMA carries out various studies in agricultural meteorology, thus contributing to a better understanding of the interaction between climate, crop development and yield in Portugal.
