IPMA, is the national meteorological authority for aeronautics. The mission of the Centre is to promote safety, regularity and efficiency of aeronautical activities. It is its responsibility.
a)To co-ordinate the meteorological centres for aeronautics, ensuring the quality of the services provided;
b) To promote and ensure the implementation of programmes of meteorological observation for aeronautical;
c) To co-ordinate and monitor the compliance of observations in national airports with national and international;
d) To promote and ensure weather watch and forecasting for air navigation over the national territory and the flight information regions of Lisbon and Santa Maria;
e) To ensure the control of the quality of meteorological information for air navigation;
f) To study and promote the application of meteorological knowledge and techniques to aeronautics;
g) To establish, update and ensure standardization and compliance with procedures, specifications and techniques of aeronautical meteorology;
h) To develop studies on aeronautical meteorology and climatology in order to improve the services provided;
i) To propose the establishment and classification of meteorological centres for aeronautics in the national territory;
j) To collaborate in specialized training in aeronautical meteorology and climatology.
In the scope of aeronautical meteorology, IPMA co-operates with various national public and private organizations and users and, at international level, with WMO, ICAO, ECMWF, EUROCONTROL and meteorological services of other countries.
