2017-01-18 (IPMA)
This morning, 18th January 2017, a series of earthquakes were recorded in central Italy, in the province of Aquila. According to the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Volcanologia (INGV), the 3 major events occurred at 09:25 (ML 5.1), 10:14 (ML 5.5) and 10:25 (ML 5.4) UTC, with shallow depths of about 9 Km.
The earthquakes were recorded in all stations of the national seismic network of IPMA, with the first waves of the earthquake being detected at the station of Bragança, that is located about 1600 km from the epicentral zone, at 09:29, 10:17 and 10:28 respectively.
According to the INGV, for the highest magnitude event, high values of peak ground acceleration were measured, where the maximum intensity was estimated to be VIII (Mercalli Modified).
These events caused damage to the most vulnerable buildings in various locations in the region closest to the epicenter and they were felt in several localities, namely in Rome, Florence and Naples.
The subway of Rome and several schools have been evacuated.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) these events resulted from normal faulting, as expected by the local tectonics.
