The seismic activity recorded by the National Seismic Network of the Institute of Meteorology, I.P., in May, was characterized as low. 186 local and regional earthquakes were recorded. Two events were felt on the mainland, the first with local magnitude (Richter) 3.7, was felt with maximum intensity IV (MM-1956) in Olhão and the second with local magnitude of 2.9, was felt with maximum intensity III (MM-1956) in Arraiolos. An event was felt in Azores, with local magnitude of 2.9 and maximum intensity IV (MM-1956) in Ribeira Grande, Island of S. Miguel.
In terms of global seismicity 50 earthquakes were recorded with magnitude greater than 5.0, with the greatest magnitude occurring in Argentina in the region of Santiago del Estero, with moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7 on May 28 at 05: 07 (UTC). We can also highlight the seismic crisis in northern Italy in the district of Modena, Ferrara, with particular relevance to an earthquake of moment magnitude (Mw) 6.0 that occurred on May 20 at 02:03 (UTC) and caused the death of 7 persons, more than 50 injured and thousands homeless.
