December 2017 in Portugal mainland was classified as dry, with a value of precipitation that corresponds to 68% of the average value, being important to mention that this was the 9th consecutive month with values of precipitation below normal.
In the last 7 years the average value of the amount of precipitation in December has always been lower than normal value and in the last 17 years, above normal precipitation values only occurred in 2002, 2009 and 2010.
However, according to the Palmer Drought Severity Index - PDSI, in December there was a reduction in the meteorological drought situation throughout the territory, and in particular in the North; at the end of the month 6% of the territory was in extreme drought, 58% in severe drought, 29% in moderate drought and 6% in weak drought.
Regarding air temperature, the average value of average temperature, 9.29°C was lower than normal at -0.68°C. The mean value of maximum temperature, 14.34°C, was higher than normal at 0.46°C, being the 4th highest since 2000. The average value of minimum temperature, 4.23°C was lower than normal at -1.82°C.
The minimum temperature values were much lower than normal, between 1st and 7th and between 16th and 24th December. On December 1, 3 and 4, more than 60% of the mainland meteorological stations recorded temperature values equal or bellow 0°C.
