International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Working Group on Elasmobranch Fishes (WGEF) meeting took place at IPMA/Algés from 17th to 23th of June. Members that could not be present physically attended online. In total 26 participants from ten different countries in representation of several international research institutions participated the meeting
WGEF is responsible for providing assessments and advice on the state of the stocks of sharks, skates, and rays throughout the ICES area. In the WGEF 2022 meeting 31 stock were assessed: 30 occurring in ICES area and 1 with an extended distribution occurring outside ICES border
For stocks with wide-ranging distribution that extend outside the ICES areas, WGEF collaborate with other Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (FMOs) such as the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT). At the WGEF 2022, ICCAT experts have participated with to further develop the ToR for the proposed future joint ICCAT-ICES meeting to (i) assess porbeagle shark and (ii) collate available biological and fishery data on thresher sharks in the Atlantic.
