The first World Health Organisation (WHO) Expert Meeting on the animal-source foods and plant-based alternatives was held between 11th and 15th November 2024 in São Félix da Marinha, Portugal. This meeting focused on drawing up the work that will lead to recommendations on the optimal intake of foods of animal origin and plant-based alternatives.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has brought together experts from the six WHO regions, with a wide range of relevant expertise, to draw up a guideline on the optimal intake of foods of animal origin. The development of the guidelines will be carried out in accordance to the WHO Guidelines Development Group (GDG), while the Risk-Benefit Assessment Group (RBAG) will develop a comprehensive implementation framework that will take into account the nutritional, biological and chemical risks and benefits associated with foods of animal and plant origin, also taking into account sustainability.
Dr Cláudia Afonso, Principal Researcher at IPMA, IP, took part in the RBAG, where she brought her vast experience in these areas and the Portuguese perspective on foods of aquatic origin.
