Over 49 years ago, on the night of the 25th November and dawn of 26th November, a big storm passed over the Lisbon area. More than 500 persons lost their lives, more than 900 lost their homes and a large number of infrastructures were destroyed, namely bridges, roads and buildings.
The passage of a low pressure system with great instability over the region, associated with high availability of moisture over the Lisbon area resulted in an amount of rainfall in a period of 4 to 9 hours compatible with a return period of 100 years or more.
The total amount of precipitation in a 5 hour period in some meteorological stations matched the monthly average of said stations.
The weather station of São Julião do Tojal registered 110.6 mm in 5 hours (between 19 and 24h), with a high of 30 mm between 22 and 23h of November 25th. On the same night between 21 and 22h, 42 mm were registered at Sassoeiros, 60 mm at Monte do Estoril and 33 mm at Sintra/Pena.
The great amount of rainfall was the main reason of the loss of lives and the destruction of infrastructures but this event was enhanced by the degraded housing conditions often raised in a clandestine way, occupying flood plains near the stream beds.
