The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA, IP) leads the EUMETSAT Satellite Applications Facility on Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF) program. The LSA-SAF is part of a network of SAFs that ensure the development of satellite data products and applications, with particular emphasis on EUMETSAT-operated meteorological satellite missions. The LSA-SAF is dedicated to the analysis of continental surfaces, being responsible for the production and distribution of a wide range of surface variables, such as temperature, radiative fluxes, evapotranspiration, vegetation parameters, forest fires identification and monitoring, among others.
LSA-SAF has recently started its 3rd Phase of Development and Operations, which, along with the maintenance of the service started in previous phases, will create new applications for the next generation of geostationary (Meteosat Third Generation) satellites and polar orbit (EPS-Second Generation) from EUMETSAT.
The LSA-SAF is supported by a consortium involving 10 institutions from 8 European countries. The 3rd Phase kick-off meeting took place at IPMA on April 19, 20 and 21.
