Spring 2012 (March, April and May), in Portugal, was characterized by higher temperatures and a rainfall below the normal values of 1971 to 2000.
The average air temperature in the continent was 14.24°C, with an anomaly of +0.64°C above the normal value, with the average maximum temperature (19.88ºC) recorded an anomaly of +1.17°C and minimum temperature (8.59°C) an anomaly of +0.10°C. Three heat waves were registered, two in March and one in May.
The average precipitation was 173.3mm, below the normal in -38.1mm, classifying the spring as normal to dry.
The meteorological drought started in winter 2011/12 had an increase in intensity in early spring. However in April and May, there were precipitation values that led to an easing in the intensity of the meteorological drought, particularly in the north and center of the country.
