2025-03-10 (IPMA)
At the beginning of March 2025, IPMA hosted a meeting dedicated to discussing the issue of tsunami forecasting. This meeting was part of the activities of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group (ICG) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) for the North-East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Related Seas Tsunami Early Warning System (NEAMTWS). It was attended in person by 15 experts in these matters, most of them from the Tsunami Early Warning Centres (TSP - Tsunami Service Providers) of France, Italy, Greece and Portugal, and several other experts from Spain, Turkey and Romania also took part online.
In particular, a new probabilistic forecasting methodology and its possible operationalisation were discussed, and it was agreed that a test phase would be carried out to assess its operational potential, with IPMA developing work in this direction for the North-East Atlantic area.
It should be remembered that IPMA, within the scope of ICG/NEAMTWS, is one of the Tsunami Service Providers for the Northeast Atlantic, having been accredited in 2019 by the IOC.
