IPMA at the UNOC Conference

The United Nations Ocean Conference takes place in Lisbon from June 27 to July 1, 2022, and IPMA is privileged to participate.
“The Ocean Conference will be a milestone on the long way to stop the aggression to the marine environment, opening horizons of cooperation and responsibility, capable of combining the rational use of resources and services of the sea, with the preservation of the balances necessary for the maintenance of biodiversity. and the defense of the most important genetic heritage on the planet.”, highlights IPMA´s President, Miguel Miranda.
IPMA will participate in this historic moment with several initiatives: from the promotion of discussion panels at conferences, workshops or pitch sessions; being represented with stands in the exhibition space; and through the signing of scientific cooperation protocols with international organizations.
The initiatives will take place in two spaces: in the Blue Zone of the Conference with restricted access and in the "One Sustainable Ocean" area, a space near the Conference, placed in the Portugal Pavilion, in Parque das Nações, whose access is free upon prior online registration (access the link below).
The complete IPMA participation program can be consulted in the attachment, but we highlight the following:
- "Grand Challenges in Ocean Science for a Sustainable Future", an IPMA/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI, USA) partnership, taking place on June 27, at 10:00 am, in the Portugal Pavilion;
- “Blue economy and decarbonization to meet the climate crisis: an international agenda”, an IPMA / Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation / Portuguese Association of Business Ethics / WHOI partnership, to be held on June 30, 2022 at 4:00 pm, at Altice Arena.
IPMA will be represented in the exhibition area "Ocean Science & Business2Sea" with two stands. The first of an institutional nature, in partnership with WHOI; the second it´s thematic with the project coordinated by IPMA -"EMSO-PT European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory (Portugal) / European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory (Portugal)"; and the third from S2AQUAcoLAB - Collaborative Laboratory in Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture, from IPMA.
Also within the scope of the Conference, two protocols of scientific cooperation in the area of the Sea and Marine Resources will be signed. The first between IPMA and the Marine Institute (Ireland), on 23 June, and the second with WHOI, on 29 June. The protocols aim, among other topics, at monitoring the marine environment, aquaculture, new seafood products, as well as the quality and food safety of fish, marine research infrastructure, cooperation in fisheries, renewable energy and technology, as well as exploring opportunities research and innovation projects in the Atlantic area.
