The international research survey “IBERAS0922” is ongoing between September 27 and October 9, onboard the spanish research vessel “Angeles Alvariño”. The survey takes place in the Iberian Coast, between the NW and SW extremes of the Iberian Peninsula (respectively Finisterra in Spain and Sagres in Portugal), although this year a more restricted area will be covered, and is a cooperation between Instituto Español de Oceanografia (IEO) and IPMA.
The survey aims to investigate small pelagic fishes, and more precisely, to estimate, through acoustic methods, the strength of the recruitment of sardine and European anchovy and investigate the potential natural causes for the interanual fluctuations of the stocks of these species.
The surveys of the series IBERAS/JUVESAR started in the scope of national projects (for example SARECOOP and SARDINHA2020) of the Division of Modelling and Management of Fisheries Resources (DivRP) of IPMA and in 2022 the survey was integrated in the National Programme for Biological Sampling, of the same Division.
The survey IBERAS is part of the National Work Plans of Portugal and Spain of the Data Collection Framework, within the scope of the Common Fisheries Policy.
