The research survey “Flemish Cap” was carried out between the 4th July and 25st August onboard the RV Vizconde de Eza. The Flemish Cap is located in the Northwest Atlantic ocean, to the east of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
This survey is performed annually since 1988. This year was the 35th edition, which resulted from the collaboration of Instituto Español de Oceanografia (IEO), Instituto de Investigaciones Mariñas (IIM-CSIC) and IPMA. The survey if part of the Data Collection Framework of the European Union, in the scope of the Common Fisheries Policy.
The objective of the survey is to characterize the population state of marine species, namely their abundance, biomass and demographic structure, as well as oceanographic conditions. This information is used for the assessment of fisheries resources in the area (especially for those under fisheries moratorium, and for those for which there is no information from sampling onboard of commercial vessels done by scientific observers) and for ecosystem based management.
This survey represents the main source of fisheries independent data in the area. The data obtained are presented annually in the meeting of the NAFO Scientific Council, and are used for scientific advice to NAFO Fisheries Comission.
