On the 4th October 2016, the National Weather Service commemorated the 70th birthday of its creation, of which the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. is the institutional heir.
The first meteorological observations conducted in Portugal are from 1747 at Madeira Island, XVIII century and on the 1st December 1865 a daily forecast was initiated in Lisbon, to be broadcasted in the local newspapers.
Although the first weather services were created in Portugal mainland and Azores Island, only in 1946 a national weather service was created through the unification of several already existing services distributed across several ministries.
