The workshop "Microfluidic sensors for rapid detection of biotoxins in shellfish" organized by the Coastal Project was held at IPMA on April 22. There was 58 people registered for the workshop, which took place in person and online. The opening session included a warm welcome speech by the President of the Board of Directors of IPMA., followed by an overview of the Coastal project Coordinator Dr. Alisa Rudnitskaya (CESAM-UAveiro). Dr. Maria João Botelho, Head of IPMA's Marine Toxins Laboratory, and Dr. John Aasen from Norwegian University of Life Sciences presented the monitoring programs for marine toxins in Portugal and Norway. The guest Dr. Isidro Blanquet, President of the Portuguese Association of Aquaculturists, explained the challenges faced by shellfish producers during marine toxins occurrence. The exhibition of the developed biosensor to quantify paralytic shellfish toxins was given by Dr. Catarina Moreirinha (CESAM-UAveiro), having gathered a lot of interest and allowingthe Portuguese stakeholders to know the advantages of this tool. The participants at the round table included the speakers and Dr. Rui Oliveira from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services and Frøydis Skottvoll from SINTEF, who identified the next steps to be taken for the improvement, production and commercialization of the biosensor.
