Ericeira is a coastal village located in the municipality of Mafra, Portugal. Situated approximately 35 km northwest of Lisbon, Ericeira is known for its beautiful beaches, excellent surfing, and peaceful atmosphere, not only because sea urchins are at the root of its name. The name comes from the Latin Ericiaria, the place where sea urchins abound. Surfing4Inclusion is a surf-related movement that seeks to promote the inclusion of people with diverse abilities, experiences, and conditions, highlighting the potential of surfing as an accessible and inclusive activity for all. The economist Miguel Toscano, President of the Ericeira Surf Club, visited IPMA on March 20, 2024, and offered IPMA, represented by Dr. Ivone Figueiredo, Director of the Department of the Sea and Marine Resources, a Uni (Japanese name for sea urchin) authored by artist and surfer Paulo Reis, but produced by people with disabilities within the Surfing4Inclusion project. This is a sports and social innovation project based on the sustainable development model of the Ericeira Surf Club, with people with disabilities at the center of this process, with a special focus on visual, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
