2024-11-04 (IPMA)
The IPMA is heavily involved in the global ocean observing network using fishing vessels (FVON - The Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network), being one of the founding members along with the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of Algarve, the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology-National Research Council (CNR-IRBIM) of Italy, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) of the USA, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), Kyushu University in Japan, MetService of New Zealand, the School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the USA, Oceanum Ltd of New Zealand, and Ocean Data Network, Inc. of the USA.
Between 22nd and 24th october, 2024, a preparatory meeting for this network took place at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, to define its governance structure and business plan. A. Miguel Santos, Senior Researcher at IPMA and at CCMAR, attended the meeting, representing both institutions. It was decided to establish a provisional Secretariat, temporarily hosted at the EDF, led by Christopher Cusak (EDF) and comprising Aubrey Taylor (EDF) and Dustin Colson Leaning (EDF), supported by a representative from IPMA (tba) and Emilie Breviere (SMHI).
FVOM was already endoresed by GOOS (Global Ocean Observing System) and UNDOS (United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development).
