2024-04-26 (IPMA)
From April 18 to April 25th, two elements of IPMA's Fisheries Resource Modeling and Management Division (DivRP) took part in the UWTV FU3-4 Nephrops survey (Skagerrak and Kattegatt) in Sweden, for training on the equipment and methods used to assess Norway lobster on board the NI Svea from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in an expedition coordinated by Patrik Jonsson.
Monitoring the Norway lobster resource on the Portuguese mainland coast is an obligation of IPMA, under the National Biological Sampling Program (PNAB), with funding from the European Commission (FEAMPA), MAR2030 (MAR-014.7.2-FEAMPA-00001) and a national contribution, through the Instituto de Financiamento da Agricultura e Pescas, I.P.). To date, this monitoring has involved annual trawl surveys targeting crustaceans onboard IPMA vessels (RV Noruega and RV Mário Ruivo). In other member countries of the European Union, the main basis for assessment to propose catch options for Norway lobster functional units (FU), has been carried out through Underwater Television Surveys (UWTV) and burrow counts [ICES, 2023/ICES WGNEPS group].
To keep up with the best practices and obtain specialized training on the planning, execution and analysis of image data collected onboard the UWTV survey, IPMA is preparing its transition in the methodology adopted for monitoring the resource. To that purpose, Dr. Bárbara Pereira, coordinator of the crustacean surveys and stock coordinator of the Norway lobster Functional Units 28-29 (southwest and south of Portugal) and Corina Chaves, head of mission for the crustacean trawl surveys since 2016, took part in the UWTV campaign in FU3-4 (Skagerrak and Kattegatt), Sweden, on board the RV Svea.
