The 3rd Workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal (NWP) took place on 14 and 15 November 2024. This edition took place in the auditorium of the Dom Luís Institute (IDL) of the Faculty of Sciences (FC) of the University of Lisbon (UL) and follows on from a first edition held in 2018 at IPMA headquarters and a second edition in 2021 hosted by the Earth Sciences Institute (ICT) of the University of Évora (UE).
The organising committee for these events also includes the Centre for Naval and Oceanic Engineering and Technology (CENTEC) of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of UL, the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (UA), the Centre for Research and Agro-environmental and Biological Technologies (CITAB) of the University of Trás-os-Montes (UTAD), the University of Algarve (UAlg) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
This year's edition focused on modelling forest fires and extreme temperature, precipitation and wind events, such as heat waves, droughts, floods, post-tropical cyclones and sea waves.
Of the three dozen or so papers, IPMA's papers in the area of meteorological forecasting are worth mentioning - ‘Assessing the guidance of very-high horizontal resolution forecasts from DEODE un Madeira’ (Miguel Pardal/DivMV) and ‘Assessment of predictors of convective storms in mainland Portugal based on ECMWF forecasts’ (Margarida Belo-Pereira/DivMA). There were also presentations by the ECMWF on the latest developments in artificial intelligence applied to meteorological forecasting.

On November 14 and 15, 2024, the 3rd edition of the biennial workshop on “Numerical Weather Prediction in Portugal” will take place at the Instituto Dom Luiz in Lisbon, with the IPMA (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere) as the organizing member.
This workshop aims to showcase ongoing work in this field and promote the exchange between different teams, creating a platform for national-level synergies to optimize resources in the development of Numerical Weather Prediction.
This year, the workshop will focus on high-resolution process modelling and validation, with a special emphasis on modelling forest fires and extreme events such as heat waves, droughts, floods, post-tropical cyclones, heavy precipitation, strong winds, and maritime agitation.
