2024-12-17 (IPMA)
On 9, 10 and 11 December 2024, in Reading, England, two annual coordination meetings of very important organisations took place in IPMA's area of activity, particularly in the field of numerical weather prediction.
On the 9th, the Assembly of the ‘A Consortium for COnvection-scale modelling Research and Development’ (ACCORD) met, the pan-European consortium for the research and development of high-resolution weather forecasting models, whose best-known numerical model is AROME. The meeting took stock of 2024 and approved the work plan for 2025.
On the following days, the 10th and 11th, the Council of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) met, a European entity recognised for developing the best global numerical weather forecast model and where Portugal is represented by IPMA. The meeting approved the strategies for the next four years, as well as the long-term strategy (2025 to 2034). The latest developments in technology and modelling were also showcased, with a strong emphasis on the application of machine learning to forecasting models.
