On March 23rd, World Meteorological Day is celebrated, a date that marks, worldwide, the importance of meteorological, climatic and hydrological services for safeguarding lives and property.
The WMO defined the theme of the year as “On the frontline of climate action”, a theme based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) when it refers to “taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.”
IPMA, as the national meteorology authority for general and maritime purposes and climate, once again joins the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in this celebration, which takes place all over the world.
"The importance of weather and climate forecasts is undeniable for preventing or mitigating the harmful effects of climate change, in sectors as diverse as food production, population security or climate-sensitive diseases. Early warning systems help to reduce poverty by giving people the opportunity to prepare for and limit the impact of extreme weather conditions", as stated in the WMO statement.
The Institute dedicates a week of celebrations to this important event. Among them, several initiatives are planned that involve the community and various actors, particularly from the educational environment.
In this context, the Opening Session of Meteorology Week took place on March 20th, which runs between March 20th and 27th, in which several government figures were present, the Institute's Board of Directors, representatives of the General Directorate of Education (for signing of the collaboration protocol), as well as a room full of IPMA workers, including the meteorology and climate team. Various initiatives were presented at the Session, including:
