2023-12-05 (IPMA)
The 2023 edition of the “Demersal” research survey is being performed onboard IPMA’s research vessel “Mário Ruivo” between November 23 and December 20.
This survey takes place annually, during 30 days in the last quarter of the year, covering the continental shelf of mainland Portugal, following a sampling plan with 96 bottom trawl hauls.
With this survey, IPMA aims to monitor the populations of fishery resources (such as the European hake and horse mackerel), estimate their abundance, spatial distribution and their length structure. Data on biodiversity, under the scope of the MFSD (Marine Strategy Framework Directive), are also collected. Evidence of anthropogenic impacts, such as the occurrence of non-natural objects, is also monitored.
The survey is performed under the scope of the National Biological Sampling Program (PNAB), which is a responsibility of IPMA’s Division of Modelling and Management of Fisheries Resources (DivRP). PNAB is integrated in the European Union’s Data Collection Framework, under the scope of the Common Fisheries Policy. The survey is conducted following accepted methodologies coordinated by the IBTSWG (International Bottom Trawl Survey Working Group) of ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea), under the official designation of PT-IBTS Q4 Survey.
