FishChoice is an online tool that helps the public to make informed decisions about seafood consumption, being free of charge, providing users with information about the benefits and risks, as well as, seafood sustainability. It is available in 25 languages.
The first concept of this tool was created within the scope of the ECsafeSEAFOOD, an European funded project coordinated by IPMA, having been updated in the course of a new project, SEAFOODTOMORROW, also with European funding and IPMA coordination.
FishChoice guides consumers to obtain the maximum nutritional benefits from their seafood consumption, while reducing exposure to chemical contaminants. The tool also helps consumers to make sustainable choices based on the origin of species and fishing methods used.
To start, the FishChoice user selects the country and, based on that selection, the tool shows the most consumed fish species. Once the weekly menu of seafood has been selected, together with the population group, the user can browse through the results corresponding to the consumption of nutrients and pollutants, as well as sustainability.
The tool compares the intake of nutrients and contaminants with the corresponding recommendations established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). FishChoice informs the user if the nutrient intake is below the recommended minimum or above the maximum tolerable intake. Finally, FishChoice also provides tips, in traffic light format, for consuming seafood sustainably, such as whether a species is endangered, or what type of fishing method should be avoided or prioritized.
An app for the tool is currently under development and will be available for iOS Apple and Android in March 2021.
