April hot and very rainy

April 2020, in mainland Portugal, was classified as hot and very rainy.
The average value of the average air temperature, 13.91 ° C, was higher than normal with an anomaly of + 0.76 ° C.The average value of the maximum air temperature, 18.56 ° C, was higher than normal with an anomaly of + 0.38 ° C.
The average value of the minimum air temperature, 9.26 ° C, was 1.12 ° C higher than normal, being the 5th highest since 2000 (highest in 2011, 11.12 ° C) and the 14th since 1931.
The average value of the amount of precipitation in March, 116.9 mm, corresponds to 148% of the normal value 1971-2000 (78.9 mm). In terms of spatial distribution, precipitation values were higher than normal throughout the territory and in particular in the regions of Centro and Alto Alentejo.
At the end of April, in relation to the end of March, there was an increase in the values of percentage of water in the soil throughout the territory and in particular in the regions of the North and Center., However in some places of Baixo Alentejo and Algarve values are still below 40%.
According to the PDSI index, in late April (Figure), there was a decrease in the area and intensity of the meteorological drought:
- In the Central and South regions, where the severe drought class no longer occurs,
- The moderate drought class is still maintained in Baixo Alentejo and Algarve;
- At the end of the month, about 1/3 of the territory was in a situation of meteorological drought (classes of weak and moderate drought).
