Winter 2019/2020
Winter 2019/20 (December 2019, January and February 2020) in mainland Portugal was classified as extremely hot and dry (Figure 1).
It was the 2nd warmest winter since 1931 (the warmest was recorded in 1990). The average value of the average air temperature, 11.00 ° C, was higher than normal with an anomaly of +1.47 ° C.
The average value of the maximum temperature, 15.67 ° C, was the highest value since 1931, with an anomaly of +1.92 ° C in relation to the normal value 1971-2000.
The average value of the minimum air temperature, 6.33 ° C, was also higher than the normal, +1.01 ° C, being the 3rd highest value since 2000. Minimum air temperature values higher than this winter occurred in about 20% of the years since 1931.
The total amount of precipitation that occurred in the months of December to February, 275.1 mm, corresponds to about 78% of the average value (Figure 3). Precipitation values lower than this winter have occurred in about 40% of the years since 1931.
