May was classified as very hot in relation to air temperature and extremely dry in relation to precipitation (Figure 1).
It was the 7th hottest May since 1931 and the 4th since 2000.
The maximum air temperature value was the second highest since 1931 (highest in 2015). During the month there was a heat wave, beginning on May 22 and that lasted until the first days of June which covered almost all the territory (Figure 2) and, on 30 and 31 May, the previous higher values of the maximum air temperature were exceeded in some coastal weather stations. It was the 6th drier May since 1931 (drier in 1991) and the 3rd drier since 2000, after 2006 and 2003. In this way the situation of weather drought worsened and at the end of May almost all the territory was in drought (Figure 3): 2.5% in the extreme drought class, 27.9% in the severe drought class, 22.4% in the moderate drought class, 46.1% in the low dry class and 1.8% in normal class.
