During yesterday afternoon, January 2nd, in São Paio, Gouveia, there was a very strong wind episode. This episode included destruction in homes, several infrastructures and vegetation. According to the available elements, there were several damages in tiled roofs, windows, chimneys, walls and trees.
According to the preliminary assessment that was possible to perform based on testimony and weather radar observations, it was found that the occurred phenomenon is compatible with downburst (figure 1). It is a phenomenon that originates at levels relatively above-ground, in which the organization of descending air currents is observed, often intensified by evaporative cooling processes. These currents will propagate horizontally after hitting the ground. These flows can be quite strong, as in the present case, often affecting very limited areas.
Should other elements enable a deeper insight on this episode, the information will be conveyed in due time.
