The month of January in Portugal mainland was classified as normal regarding air temperature and very dry regarding the amount of precipitation.
The average value of the average air temperature in January was 8.26°C, 0.55°C below the normal value. Values lower than those of January 2017 occurred in about 30% of the years, since 1931.
The average value of the maximum temperature, 13.54°C, was higher than the normal value (anomaly of +0.45°C) and the mean value of the minimum air temperature, 2.98°C, was much lower than the normal value (anomaly of -1.56°C). Lower temperature values occurred only in 15% of the years, since 1931.
From the 17th to the 21st of January, due to a north-east flow, determined by the anticyclone located in the Netherlands and a depression centered in the Central Mediterranean, Portugal was under the influence of very cold and dry air - Polar Continental Air, which resulted in a decrease in the values of maximum and minimum air temperature throughout the country.
The 19th was the coldest day (average temperature of 3.0°C) and the coldest night, with the average value of minimum temperature of -3.6°C, occurring in the early hours of that day.
The total precipitation was about 53% of normal, which classifies this month as very dry. Precipitation values lower than January 2017 occurred in only 25% of the years, since 1931.
In the month of January there was an increase of the area in weak drought situation in the whole territory, only the windward Algarve is not in drought.
