The month of August 2017 in mainland Portugal continued to be hot and dry, having been the 9th month of August warmer since 2000, with an average value of average air temperature of 23.03°C, + 0.88°C above normal value.
The average value of maximum air temperature was 30.86°C, + 2.06°C above normal value, and corresponds to the 7th highest value since 2000. The highest values of maximum temperature in August occurred in 2003, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2001, 2013; on the other hand the average value of minimum air temperature, 15.19°C was -0.31°C lower than normal value.
From 3 to 6 and from 11 to 26 August was very warm, with high values of air temperature, in particular the maximum temperature.
August 20 and 21 were the hottest days of the month, with average temperatures of 27.4°C (+5.2°C compared to normal) and 27.0°C (+4.8°C vs. normal), respectively.
On 20th the average maximum temperature was 37.3°C (+ 8.5°C in relation to normal); on this day there is need to point out:
• Maximum temperature values higher than 30°C (hot days) were observed in more than 90% of the meteorological stations;
• 66% of the meteorological stations recorded maximum temperature values higher than 35°C (very hot days)
• 27% of the meteorological stations registered values higher than 40°C (extremely hot days).
On August 4 and 21, there were values of maximum temperature above 40°C in the Central and South regions, with the highest values (≥43°C) in Alvega, 43.7°C; Lousã, 43.6°C; Santarem, 43.3°C; and Tomar, 43.1°C.
On 20th and 21st the average minimum temperature was, respectively, 17.5°C and 18.6°C. In these days, in about 25% of the stations, values of minimum temperature ≥20°C (tropical nights) were observed.
Regarding precipitation, the month of August was classified as dry, with a mean value of precipitation in mainland Portugal of 8.2 mm, which corresponds to 60% of the average value. Lower precipitation amounts have occurred in about 40% of the years since 1931.
During the month precipitation only occurred in the last days, in particular on the 28 and 29, where significant amounts of precipitation were recorded accompanied by hail and thunderstorms.
The highest values of daily rainfall occurred in Coimbra (31.5mm), Montalegre (29.4mm), Lousã (26.7mm), Viseu (25.5mm), Elvas (23.4mm) and Beja (21.5mm).
